An article by researchers from DTU Energy has been selected as a HOT article for 2016 by the editors of the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

The article “Accelerated ceria–zirconia solubilization by cationic diffusion inversion at low oxygen activity”, written by Vincenzo Esposito, De Wei Ni, Debora Marani, Francesca Teocoli and Karl Tor Sune Thydén from DTU Energy in collaboration with Brazilian colleagues Daniel Zanetti De Florio and Fabio Coral Fonseca has been selected as a HOT article for 2016 by the editors of Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

The article describes how fast elemental diffusion at the Gd-doped ceria/Y-stabilized zirconia interface occurs under reducing conditions with low content of oxygen, e.g. in presence of hydrogen or other fuels.

This was observed by formation of thick ceria–zirconia solid solution reaction layers that are electrically insulating. The investigation showed that fast dissolution occurs 1000 times faster than expected because of an inversion of the dominating diffusion mechanisms.

“We were able to go into the atomic level with simple tools, thereby disclosing a complex mechanism in a simple way. It took some time to analyze and interpret the data, and I am very proud of the result. Of course, I am also very pleased that article was selected as HOT.”
